So what I’ve done is changed the key from C to G, which enables those of us with lower voices to si...

First I’m going to teach you how to play a harmonic and make it sound gorgeous, then I’ll show you where you can find them on your fretboard, and then I’ll show you how to use them to spice up the ending of a song. Is my thick pick messing up my strumming?
Переглядів 2,3 тис.3 роки тому
Luke Skywalker had his lightsaber. Bilbo Baggins had Sting. And we guitarists have our tools of greatness: Our guitar of course, but also the humble shard of plastic in our fingers. And like many of the heroes in our favorite stories, we are on a quest to find the perfect match. In this excerpt from a member's Q&A, I help Rusty consider how the thickness of his pick might be causing his upstrum...

When Doves Cry is pretty easy as Am G Em F G] (play the second G as a fakey F @ 3rd fret)
Thanks. I appreciate your help.
I hadn't seen your guitar before. Looks just like mine; an antique, made in 1947. I bought it in 1961 'cause I didn't have the dough for a new Martin. You've got Nice right hand work.
Oh thanks man! I think mine's a '52? It was my mom's guitar, and the one I learned to play on. My most precious possession.
What a great tribute to John Prine. Thank you so much for sharing this. I received this in your email today. I read all your emails with the goal of picking up the guitar again which I need to do soon! Thanks again.
Thanks for the kind note, and let me know if you need help getting a jumpstart!
I have watched players use that anchored G and C and now I know why! THANK YOU says one more delighted singer-songwriter!
brilliant easy version!
Thank you for this video, I think everybody needs to hear this. Last year, my guitar teacher encouraged me to sing when I never thought I could. I've been working on my ear and my voice and enjoying the process.
Chimes of Freedom used this between the G and C in the start of the verse.
Very cool. Thanks!
You're welcome!
A nice song you can play to practice is fuel by Metallica
Listening now. Sweeeeeeeet!

thanks a lot for this version !!
Great lesson, with clear explanation, thank you.
Great lesson, thanks!

Great lesson, and great singing too !
Oh thanks!
Awesome teaching, awesome singing; and awesome playing. Thanks so much.
You're very welcome, thanks for the kind note.
Solid. Rob's instruction is very thorough.
Thanks, Mike! Good to hear from you.
Thank you for this.
My pleasure!
I’m using the grip you mentioned in the video, the issue I’ve been having is my thumb moves away from the strings when using the other fingers. How do I keep my thumb close to the strings and not fly away from the strings?
Grab an easy chord, focus 100% of your attention on your thumb, and play your picking pattern incredibly slowly (at first), moving your thumb back into proper position whenever it strays. You will need to sustain intense concentration and make lots of correct repetitions of this movement to program new muscle memory.
also, why would i? mother used to look up to singers a lot in my childhood, but she never cared about me, so... so the resolution of this being in her not the least interested in listening to my music is not quite the happy ending you know...
I am a musician, a singer, and a total fraud if you will. I have tried for decades, and had to turn to alternative ways to make my music happen. Currently I use money and AI to fake it, but I have been through a long-ass journey being poor and having to test everything i possibly could on my own. I tried, I obsessively unhealthily tried. Seriously. I just... notes don't want anything, okay? They don't, to me, they don't. I DO THIS for a living because I'm a stubborn asshole and sold my soul to the devil, but either it is 100% real or I am utterly useless and embarrassingly stupid which i guess of course it's always a possibility, in which case you shouldn't be reading anything from me anyway, so... sigh... it's SO FRUSTRATING! It's like devoting your life to painting being blind. Like everybody else can live in 4d while you go all stupid in 3d without knowing what others plot against you in that extra dimension. Yes, that is absolutely paranoid, but what do you expect when others see what you can't. it doesnt come for free....
Thank you so much ❤😊😊
You're so welcome!
This is such a great lesson ! Thank you so much.
You're very welcome!
Amazing lesson with tips for singing ! Thanks a lot
You are most welcome! Glad you dug it.
I may be odd, but I can play guitar, some piano. I can hear the tones and figure it out, self taught so to speak, but I cant sing a lick...lol. I can hear my voice isn't right, and so I just stopped trying to sing. So why is it I hear and play instruments, pretty good, but can't sing? Voice just breaks, either to high or to low and monotone, and not really interested in singing. Love to play, but forget the singing...lol.
Brilliant lesson thank you.
You're very welcome!
Love your style, great teaching scales too bad you're not closer.
Aw, thanks! Hey, if you become a member of Heartwood Guitar we could at least meet in my Q&A's twice a month...not the same as in-person, I know, but they're pretty rad.
Love it!!
Glad you dug it.
I have an easier time picking with a thick pick but strumming with a thin pick, but this is a problemwhen I want to play a song that switching between strumming and picking. I'll try to watch my grip
Yes, I was in the same boat in my early years of playing guitar. Learning to control a thicker pick when strumming is the answer, but it's a long road.
I like .73 or similar.
Youre literally recording. Why not showmit on the video?
I followed your video minute by minute and successfully re-strung my family's old guitar that might have had its original strings from thirty years ago. It's so much nicer now. The next morning it was still in tune! Thanks for this excellent guide.
Great to hear!
As a person diagnosed with Amusia, I listen to music...and even enjoy it. There is more to music then tone, there are about 14,000 people in the US with fully diagnosed Amusia and it would likely be higher if people actually got checked for it and I am willing to bet that I am not the only one who listens to music and enjoys it. I don't know who told you that people with Amusia can't enjoy music, they are wrong, even deaf people enjoy the beat of music. They just enjoy it in a different way than what you equate to your experience.
Thanks so much for helping me understand this better. Do you have a favorite genre or artist or song? I wonder if people with amusia gravitate to genres of music where melody and harmony are less important.
Thank you. Great
Excellent! Now I need a set of those 'slow down' and 'simplify' wrenches to put up on my wall as a reminder. Hey! Heartwood Guitar swag idea? 😀
:)
Nice lesson
